"When I started residency, I was eager for challenges. I wanted them all-lots of gynecological cases, lots of deliveries, and, overall, I wanted to feel that there was so much more for me to learn everyday. Very soon into my intern year, I realized that Bridgeport Hospital program would give me the tools necessary to feel confident once I was done with residency. I learned to be independent, yet never alone. Nowadays, residency completed, I feel that the best thing I learned was the skill to sort through challenging scenarios and develop appropriate management plans. I will be ever grateful to the physicians, nurses, and the rest of the people who participated in my training. It was crucial to me to feel supported and comfortable, and they made it all possible."

"When I started my residency at Bridgeport Hospital, everyone opened their arms to me. Warmth and friendship was always at my hand. The program gave me, since day one the best training I could ever ask for. My years at Bridgeport were not just rewarding but my skills as an ob/gyn were growing and improving constantly. Even though I felt confident in my surgical skills and knowledge at the end of my residency, I wondered if they would be enough for me to be successful in the "real" world. Today, I appreciate every single experience I had at Bridgeport. I have found use for each one of them. My surgical and laparoscopic skills exceed the ones of my colleagues. I am capable of solving many different cases, take care of high risk pregnancies, and offer my patients minimally invasive surgery. I will always have Bridgeport in my heart; it is the place where I became the successful doctor I am today."

"I came to Bridgeport as a first year resident in 2001. Bridgeport Hospital became my home and I soon realized that now I belong to a new family. I had a wonderful time during my four years of residency and learned far more than what I expected. If you become a resident at Bridgeport Hospital you will soon realize that the attending and nursing staff are part of your life., They will remember your birthday and throw you a baby shower just like a little family. You are never alone and you will enjoy it. However Bridgeport Hospital's OBGYN program has a lot to teach you and be prepared for hard work and lots of learning. I became a far better surgeon than I ever dreamt of at Bridgeport Hospital and all the skills that I developed during my residency are now helping me get through my oncology fellowship easier."

--Alireza Abidi, M.D., GYN Oncology Fellow
Class of 2005

"Ob/Gyn residency was a rich and rewarding experience at Bridgeport Hospital. The surgical training was rigorous and vast, with more than enough "interesting" cases in number and in diversity. Obstetrics is well covered by the wealth of knowledge provided by the numerous perinatologists who make education infectious. Overall, the teaching attendings are very supportive and eager to teach. Rotations through the Yale-New Haven Hospital were also enriching and presented an alternate perspective being a major academic center. As a community hospital, Bridgeport has an enormous and highly mixed population, which is rich with learning opportunities. The teaching staff of the other departments within Bridgeport Hospital have also been very supportive of residents' education and well being."

"Bridgeport hospital was the greatest experience that I had throughout my residency training. I was involved in different residency programs before but none came close to the Bridgeport Hospital experience. There is a healthy, challenging and caring environment that nurtures both academic and clinical excellence. There is an excellent patient population both from clinic and private patients that made the OR experience readily available at all levels. We are also blessed to have many skilled attending physicians. These experiences are priceless and they are what make Bridgeport Hospital unique in residency training."

"Residency training at Bridgeport Hospital has prepared me well to become a competent clinician. Because it is a small program, personalized attention was given to each individual resident. It provided great education especially in Perinatology, Oncology, and Laparoscopic surgery. I have also made some good friends during my residency."

"The demands of any residency program are rigorous and because you spend so much time here, it is important to get along. At Bridgeport Hospital you start to feel like a family. Since the program size was small, the faculty knows you well. You work closely with the perinatologist, first assist with the Gyn Oncologist and develop excellent laparoscopic skills. The delicate balance between resident autonomy vs. close attending supervision has been achieved."

--Linda Padilla, M.D.
Class of 2001

"The fact that Bridgeport Hospital's residency program is small was a great advantage for me. I enjoyed the one-on-one training from a variety of attending physicians. One can take the most effective tools learned from each physician and incorporate them into one's own practice. The residency program is not easy, nor should it be. Anything in life truly worthwhile must be difficult to achieve."

--Scott Vander Vennet, M.D., FACOG
   Class of 1998

"I also do a fair amount of bragging about Bridgeport Hospital to students in prospective residency that come through our department. I do spend a lot of time singing the praises of the residency program and the great experiences that I had there. I owe a great deal to Bridgeport Hospital for giving me the opportunity to complete my residency there. I feel that my education at Bridgeport Hospital was second to none and I would not trade my experience there for anything in the world.
