In cooperation with Yale­New Haven Hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine, the Department of Emergency Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital supports a regional graduate medical education program for residents. The goal of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art training to prepare clinically superior, academically oriented leaders in emergency medicine.

The four-year program supports 12 positions per year, beginning in the first post-graduate year. The curriculum is divided between the two hospitals, with two-thirds of the time spent at Yale­New Haven Hospital and one-third of the time at Bridgeport Hospital. The primary goal of the Bridgeport Hospital experience is to provide residents with expert training in a community hospital setting, demonstrating the way emergency medicine is practiced in the majority of hospitals throughout the country.

The didactic curriculum is centered around a five-hour conference schedule every Wednesday morning. This includes Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, Core Curriculum Review Conferences, small group learning, simulation, and specialty conference in fields such as toxicology, EMS, electrocardiography, research methodology, ED administration, pharmacology, computers/ informatics, procedural skills, and ultrasound.

The department of Emergency Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital also provides didactic and clinical training to off-service residents from the Departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynecology, as well as to pre-hospital care providers from the various local EMS services, and to physician-assistant students from four affiliated universities.

Highlights of the clinical curriculum, in addition to required rotations in emergency medicine and related specialties, include six rotations in critical care units, six rotations of elective/research time, training in diagnostic ultrasound, and extensive exposure to trauma and pediatric emergency medicine.

Facilities

Yale­-New Haven Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Yale-­New Haven together provide 900 beds and serve both the primary and tertiary care needs of southern New England. Annually, the YNHH Emergency Department cares for approximately 74,000 patients, including 22,000 pediatric visits.

Bridgeport Hospital has an annual Emergency Department census of 62,000, including 22,000 pediatric visits. Because our catchment area includes urban, suburban, and semi-rural communities, we see a wide variety of clinical problems. The department supports an occupational medicine service and an early intervention stroke team.

Bridgeport Hospital and Yale­-New Haven Hospital are the only Level I Trauma Centers in Southern Connecticut. Both hospitals are ALS base station receiving hospitals, with approximately 25 percent of patients arriving by ambulance. In addition, both hospitals receive patients via the LifeStar helicopter.
