POLICIES and PROCEDURES:

Daytime Duty Hours:

Daily requirements will vary but generally the expectation is that the fellow will be at the clinical site from 9AM-5PM. These hours may shift as needed, but at no time will the fellow be expected to be engaged in clinical activities for more than 14 hours a day.

On-Call:

Fellows will be placed in the call rotation with the attending physicians and nurse practitioners. Call will telephone call from home. The fellow will not be on call more frequently than every 4th night and every 5th weekend. Fellows are expected to document their calls and email or phone the attending physicians the following day to update them on their patients. On weekdays from 9AM and 5 PM, fellows are expected to be available by pager for issues regarding their longitudinal patients.

Academic Time:

Fellows must attend weekly case conference and weekly didactic conference. They are expected to prepare cases for discussion, and will be asked to present a minimum of 2 presentations at the didactic session over the course of the year. Fellows are expected to attend monthly Journal Club and are expected to present up to 4 times at Journal Club. Fellows are encouraged to attend Geriatric Grand Rounds at Yale and are encouraged to attend Bridgeport Hospital morning report with the residents. The Fellows may at their discretion choose to attend weekly Internal Medicine Grand Rounds and conferences presented for the other fellowship programs.

Vacation Policy:

Fellows will have 4 weeks time off. They must complete 11 months of clinical training in order to qualify to sit for the ABIM Geriatric Medicine board examination. Fellows must give timely notice (at least 6 weeks) to the Program Director and scheduling staff of their clinics/home visits. They must arrange coverage with an attending physician.

Moonlighting:

Moonlighting is defined as any professional activity that occurs outside the course and scope of an approved graduate medical education training program, whether or not remuneration is received. Residents at Bridgeport Hospital are not required to engage in moonlighting. Bridgeport Hospital recognizes the ACGME Institutional Requirements referable to moonlighting activity. Internal moonlighting, as described in the Institutional Requirements, must be counted toward the 80-hour weekly limit on duty hours effective July 1, 2003.

Moonlighting activities may be inconsistent with sufficient time for rest and restoration to promote the residents educational experience and safe patient care. However, those residents interested in moonlighting activity must strictly adhere to the following set of conditions. Failure to abide by these conditions may lead to disciplinary actions against a resident including dismissal from the program.

1. A resident must obtain a prospective written statement of permission from the Program Director.

2. The resident must have a valid Connecticut license to practice medicine.

3. The resident must have a malpractice insurance policy that covers his or her activity outside the training program.

Trainees on a J-1 visa may not engage in any moonlighting activities without written permission from the ECFMG

Fellow Stress:

Fellow Stress will be monitored closely by all attendings on rotations and the Program Director. The Program Director will hold informal meetings with any fellow suspected of being under stress and further action taken as needed. Referrals are made to mental health professionals when deemed necessary. Programmatic changes can also be made to help the individual cope with stress
