The GI Fellows have their own office complete with individual desks, telephones and storage space. Nearby is the Medical Library ( 24-hr access ), with over 300 journals, 4,500 texts, and several GI audio-digest cassette tapes and slide series. Articles from journals not carried in our library can be quickly accessed through a network of Connecticut libraries. The library offers computerized literature searches and personal computers with graphics programs for slide generation, word processing, and other utility programs. Other services include free photocopying, monthly table of contents for requested journals and videotape capabilities. The Pathology and Radiology Departments have the latest in DNA flow cytometry, Color Doppler Ultrasound and MRI imaging. The Nutrition Support Team is particularly active and a Nutrition Course is offered twice a year. Funding to attend local and national meetings is available, if the Fellow presents at such meetings.
The Yale Connection Several of the GI faculty and the GI Fellows attend teaching rounds at Yale University each Friday afternoon, starting with a lecture at 1:00 PM on the basic science aspects of GI and hepatobiliary physiology. This is followed by Yale Professor Rounds from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, during which 3 or 4 cases are presented by the GI Fellows from Yale or the affiliated hospitals such as Bridgeport, with comments from the GI Attendings as the case unfolds. Relevant imaging studies and pathology slides are reviewed, and the Fellow discusses an important aspect of the case and distributes a reference list. Other activities at Yale include Visiting Professorships, collaborative research projects and 3 Journal Clubs per month. In addition, Yale GI faculty members come to Bridgeport Hospital monthly to conduct the Tuesday GI Conference.
