Consults

The 1st-year GI Fellow does consultations on insured patients in conjunction with the private GI faculty, and occasionally may care for some of these attending's own patients. On the other hand, the 2nd and 3rd-year GI Fellows do consultations mostly on Team Care or General Surgery under the supervision of Drs. Abdelsayed and Gupta. The twice-weekly out-patient GI Clinic permits follow-up of these patients along with the opportunity to see new consultations. The 2nd and 3rd-year GI Fellows also see most of the nutrition support consultations on non-surgical patients. Medical and surgical residents as well as medical students from Yale and elsewhere rotate through the GI Service and participate in all these activities.

The 3-year GI Fellowship is conducted at the PGY-4 through 6 levels. The Section of GI is both a consulting and teaching service in the Department of Medicine. Consultations arise mostly from Internal Medicine and its sub-specialties, but they may also come from other services such as General Surgery and Pediatrics. There are about 120 beds on the Internal Medicine services. Approximately 60 percent of these patients have medical insurance and are managed by private attendings. The remaining, non-insured patients are cared for by the general medicine housestaff on "Team Care", although interesting private patients may also be admitted and followed by the housestaff on Team Care.
